One of the best parts about summer are all the great, FREE, outdoor activities that the city has to offer. If you’re looking for something other than day parties, beer gartens and rooftop soirees(feature to come on those summer hotspots), we’ve got two suggestions you’d be a fool to miss out on.

Jazz in the Garden

*from diningindc.net*

Jazz in the Garden is held every Friday evening, as long as the weather permits, from 5 to 8:30pm at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. You can lounge with friends in the garden as you admire the artwork and enjoy food & drinks from the Pavilion Cafe or you can bring your own.The musical performances range from more traditional jazz artists to Afro-Cuban and  everything in between.

Check out the schedule here to see who’s playing & when.

Screen on the Green

*from searchforjstreet.blogspot.com*

I can’t tell you all how excited I was to learn that the Scren on the Green schedule had been released yesterday. So excited that I stopped everything I was doing and decided that this post had to happen ASAP.

Screen on the Green, which is sponsored by HBO and Comcast, takes place on the National Mall. Literally it’s a huge screen set up between 7th & 12th St. to play movies for all who want to come and enjoy them. The movies typically are shown on Monday nights, with the exception of the 4th week of July when it will take place on Wednesday.

The schedule for Screen on the Green can be found here.

Quick tips for maximizing your enjoyment:

1. Arrive early!!!!!! These activities get packed quickly, so the earlier you arrive the more apt you are to get a prime location.

2. Bring snacks/drinks.

3. Bring a blanket! That is unless you enjoy sitting directly on the grass.

4. Don’t forget the insect repellant!

4. Bring friends. The more the merrier right?

Both of these activities also make for unique low cost summer date ideas! *hint hint*

What are some other outdoor activities you all love to enjoy in the summer? We’d love to hear about them & even check them out!
